Sao Do Group and green energy developer CME Solar Investment JSC (CMES) have signed a cooperation agreement to invest in a rooftop solar power system at Nam Dinh Vu Industrial Park in Hai Phong, aimed at meeting the Government's sustainable development mission and emission target.

Accordingly, at the signing event, industrial park investor Sao Do Group and CMES introduced a prospective cooperation agreement, intending to support businesses in Nam Dinh Vu Industrial Park to access and utilise clean power sources with optimal cost efficiency.

The total solar power capacity that can be installed for the entire Nam Dinh Vu Industrial Park is expected to exceed 1GWp. Therefore, the two companies aim to develop the project at 50MWp in the first phase by mid-2024, increasing to 200MWp by 2025 and 700MWp by 2030.

The initiative also aims to reduce carbon emissions, making an important contribution to the sustainable development of the industrial park. The agreement also marks the first step for Sao Do and CMES to expand other renewable initiatives in the near future.

Nam Dinh Vu Industrial Park, with a scale of 1,329ha, owns four functional subdivisions with a modern, synchronous and complete infrastructure and is expected to expand further over the next few years.

Industrial park investor Sao Do Group and CMES introduced a prospective cooperation agreement

With a prime location in the Hai Phong Economic Zone, this industrial park is considered to have great appeal towards investors, both designed in combination with the seaport system and logistics services in northern Vietnam and is expected to become a national logistics service centre by 2025.

Currently, the industrial park has attracted 65 domestic and international projects, including foreign ones from Japan, the Republic of Korea, China, Germany, France and Singapore, with diverse industries such as garments, furniture and electronics.

Enterprises in Nam Dinh Vu Industrial Park have signed cooperation agreements to promote green development in the industrial park, prioritising environmentally friendly technologies and deploying renewable energy in production and business activities through rooftop solar power systems.

This also helps reduce pressure on the national electricity system, especially during the peak dry season. Businesses are also increasing their use of renewable energy, integrating with Vietnam's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Ho Chi Minh City / Zurich 15 August, 2023 — Vietnam-based solar power developer, CME Solar Investments (CME Solar), has obtained 20 million USD as long-term senior secured financing from the Swiss-based global impact investor, responsAbility. This investment represents responsAbility's most substantial commitment to climate financing to date, bringing the total investment in CME Solar to USD 32 million by 2023. The success of their initial investment two years ago, marked by CME Solar’s technical achievements and adherence to environmental and social standards, has provided a solid foundation for this continued collaboration with responsAbility.

CME Solar, established 4 years ago, is a member of the CME Group and is recognized as the rapidly advancing solar entity in the Vietnam market. The company predominantly invests in and promotes rooftop solar solutions tailored for the Commercial and Industrial (C&I) sector in Vietnam. By mid-2023, CME Solar had installed up to 100 Megawatts Peak (MWp) and has plans to add another 150 MWp in 2024. In line with its operations, CME Solar is dedicated to adhering to the environmental and social (E&S) standards, aiming to balance social welfare, economic growth, and environmental protection.

Debt financing and expansion

Following responsAbility's initial debt funding in 2021, CME Solar has consistently met its obligations to its investors. responsAbility has therefore provided an additional facility of USD 20 million in the form of long-term senior secured debt financing to be split in 2 phases (Phase 1 for USD 12.8 million and Phase 2 for USD 7.2 million). A notable project funded by this initiative is the Foxconn Solar Project in Bac Giang - Bac Ninh, Vietnam, boasting a capacity of 31.5 MWp, which is substantial enough to power approximately 40 million kWh and save up to 20,000 tons of CO2 annually. This project adopted advanced N-type PV technology throughout and emphasized Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) standards. Completed in just three months without any environmental Incidents, the success of the Foxconn project and others in Vietnam reflects the strong partnership between responsAbility and CME Solar.

After this recent round of financial support, responsAbility’s total investment in CME Solar stands at around 32 million USD. This ranks as one of the most significant investments in a non-financial institution in Vietnam as of 2023. CME Solar Investment JSC (CMES) was named the Solar Power Project Investor of the Year at Solar PV Vietnam 2021 Virtual and the Solar Future Awards Ceremony in Shanghai, China on November 9.

The Solar Power Project Investor of the Year is a critical category of the Solar Future Awards 2021, aiming to honour the best investor in rooftop solar projects for commercial as well as industrial purposes in Vietnam and vote for businesses with the most significant influence on promoting sustainable development.

Surpassing over 100 nominations from around Vietnam, CMES has successfully establishedits name in the category's top tier.
